I U S AMERICI

SONS OF FLORENCE

AMERIGO VESPUCCI

Between 1499 and 1502, the Florentine Navigator took part in expeditions that changed the geography of the world forever, recognizing that the lands beyond the Atlantic were not the Indies, but rather a

"NEW  WORLD"

AND IT'S FOR HIM THAT

AMERICA IS BORN

In 1507, the cartographer Martin Waldseemüller created a map in Saint Dié-des Vosges, near Strasbourg in France, on which, thanks to the writings of Amerigo Vespucci, the name 'America' appears for the first time.

The map was printed in 1,000 copies, of which only one copy remains today, discovered by chance in 1901, during the restoration work of the library of the Princely Castle Waldburg zu Wolfegg (Baden Württemberg); this copy has been at the Library of Congress in Washington since 2007, where it will remain available to visitors until November 2029.

.

The Ius Americi Committee, wishing to deepen the historical and cultural connection with the Americas, proposes that every Citizen of that former "New World" can symbolically consider himself

OUR AMBASSADOR

Amerigo Vespucci, while lovingly integrating into both Spanish and Portuguese culture, always knew how to keep his Florentine roots alive and it was precisely these roots illuminated by the Renaissance that allowed him to understand that the land he had touched was a New World..

The Ambassadors who received the Amerigo Awards (photo) on March 25, 2025 in Palazzo Medici Riccardi share with Amerigo the same passion for the Land that saw them born and the same love for the City where they have chosen to live.

FILII AMERICI

The Honor is awarded to those citizens of the American continent visiting Florence who through particular merits have made the continent that bears the name of Amerigo Vespucci great..

MAN OF FANTASY

The first Citizen to receive the Award is the American Glen Kean, one of the greatest artists in the history of Animation, winner of the Oscar for the "short" Dear Basketball and creator of masterpieces such as "Beauty and the Beast", "Pocahontas", "The Little Mermaid".

On the occasion of his trip to Florence to hold a Master Class for the students of the Nemo Academy, he was awarded the title of Honorary Consul of Amerigo in Palazzo Medici Riccardi by Ambassador Adriane Chissini Da Silva, received from Alessia Bettini.
